Maud's Elm

I was not born in Cheltenham, but I was raised in the town since I could walk.  Growing up, one intriguing story was often told of a location that was literally just round the corner.  This was the Legend of Maud's Elm.  You will find all manner of versions of this tale in many and varied places and I think it safe to say that each version is particularly dubious for one reason or another.  Over the past few years I have been researching this legend and would like to share my conclusions here.
